These are two of the most beautiful districts of Hydra. Kala Pigadia takes its name from the wells built to supply water the town of Hydra. The Gorogiannis mansion, an imposing traditional building with a private church, is located in the same area.
Kiaffa was the island’s first settlement. Created gradually from Christian populations that relocated to Hydra via the Peloponnese after the fall of Constantinopolis, this first settlement developed as a fortress-like structure, according to the patterns of settlements in the Cyclades, to protect the inhabitants of the island from pirate attacks. The Kiaffa settlement had as its center the church of the Genesis of Jesus Christ (small Jesus); it and the church of St. John the Baptist Bourntaverti are considered the oldest churches of Hydra.
